Ceremony

In December, the Elders joined Internews Europe and human rights leaders to celebrate the Every Human Has Rights campaign and the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and to present the Media Awards.

The celebration took place in Paris, on Saturday December 6th, 2008 in the Maison des Arts et Metiers.

Speakers included:

  • François Zimeray, French Ambassador for Human Rights
  • Jimmy Carter, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and former President of the U.S.A.
  • Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland, former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and member of the Elders
  • Stephane Hessel, Ambassadeur de France and participant in drafting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 1948
  • Numerous other personalities from the human rights and media communities attended the event.

Special guests included Chad Radio Stations for Darfu Refugees: production facilities set up at the Maison des Arts et Metiers allowed them to relay interviews, comments and highlights of the proceedings to an estimated 400,000 people in Chad. An exhibition presenting the work of these radio stations is located in a UNHCR tent in the Trocadéro Gardens in Paris, until the 21st of December, 2008. Read more at www.voiceofdarfur.org/.
