During the summer 2008, Internews Europe invited mainstream and citizen journalists from around the world to participate in the competition for the Media Awards by submitting world and current affairs reports and stories illustrating one or several articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) - read more at: Initial Call.

Our call for participation was heard by numerous journalists and citizen journalists all around the world: we have received 482 applications in total, with stories focusing on 108 countries! Following a national, and then a regional selection, the 30 winners have been selected by an international professional jury made up of experienced journalists and human rights experts.

"It is my honor to have participated in the award deliberations of global reportage exemplifying the highest levels of integrity and professionalism. The injustices and transcendent challenges they expose are the strongest argument to the relevance and importance of the Universal Declaration” says Jimmie Briggs, Chairman of the jury.

The 30 winners are awarded an all expenses paid trip to Paris from December 5th to December 11th, 2008. On Saturday December 6th, they attended the Every Human Has Rights campaign celebration including the Awards Ceremony. They met on this occasion several personalities from the human rights and media communities.

7 special prizes were awarded at the Awards Ceremony:

  • Best TV
  • Best radio
  • Best print (online and offline)
  • Best citizen journalism/blog item
  • Best investigative report
  • Most courageous investigation/best unpublished story
  • And of course the prize of the public for the most eye-opening report - determined by your votes!
  • Award winners are assisted by Internews in Paris in covering other human rights related events across Paris in the lead up to the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration on December 10, 2008.
